Speaker: Paul Zeitz
The second-meanest math question of the 20th century: In 1999, a couple of mean-spirited math contest creators came up with a problem designed to trip up everyone. But it has a really fun solution that combines geometry, probability, combinatorics, and science fiction.  You will learn how to solve a problem that is harder than "the hardest problem on the hardest test."

​Paul was a professor at the University of San Francisco for 30 years.  He was a member of the first USA team to compete in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), and as a professor, helped to train the first team to get a perfect score at the IMO. He has organized and taught at many math camps and math circles all over the country, and was a founder of Proof School, the only secondary school in the country for "math kids," now starting its 10th year. When not doing math, he enjoys outdoor adventures with his wife and dog.

2024 Rochester Area Math Competition (RAMC)

  • Students in grades K-12 during the 2023-2024 school year are eligible to take the RAMC.
  • There are 4 competition categories: Elementary I (Grades K-2), Elementary II (Grades 3-5), Middle School (Grades 6-8), and High School (Grades 9-12). Students must register for the grade group that they are in.
  • The competition will consist of one individual round, with a set of 15 questions answered in a time frame of 45 minutes.
  • Tiebreakers will be used in the case of a tie to determine the winners of the individual round and team round.
  • Awards will be given to the top 1 individual in each grade.
  • Top 10 individuals for each division will be recognized on our website.

First Robotics Team 2530
Team 2530 High School Robotics is a varsity-level activity available to students Gr.8-12 within RPS. We teach, learn, and apply skills directly applicable to post-high school endeavors such as post-secondary education and professional jobs in industry. Our focus goes beyond traditional STEM to include Finance/Revenue and Arts/Aesthetics and be STREAM centric. Math Masters
The Math Masters mathematics competition program challenges 4th, 5th and 6th grade students to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills in mathematics. Students compete as individuals and on teams in eight rounds of competition held in March and April each year at more than 50 competition sites throughout Minnesota. Students’ academic effort and achievement is recognized with plaques, medallions and ribbons in each competition element: Fact Drill, Individual Round and Team Competition.
